Book Review: The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen
May 8th, 2010 by Danielle
Emily Benedict came to Mullaby, North Carolina, hoping to solve at least some of the riddles surrounding her mother’s life. Such as, why did Dulcie Shelby leave her hometown so suddenly? And why did she vow never to return? But the moment Emily enters the house where her mother grew up and meets the grandfather she never knew—a reclusive, real-life gentle giant—she realizes that mysteries aren’t solved in Mullaby, they’re a way of life: Here are rooms where the wallpaper changes to suit your mood. Unexplained lights skip across the yard at midnight. And a neighbor bakes hope in the form of cakes.
Absolutely divine. That’s the best way to describe this magical story about a simple southern town and the two women who change it/themselves forever. A town that has a tainted past, but the promise of a bright fantastical future with the help of Emily and Julia. There is a giant, magical lights at night and even mood changing wallpaper but the one constant are the people of Mullaby. The people are what make this story seem like a slice of “Apple Stack Cake”…welcome.
Definitely one of my favorite reads of the last year. Sarah Addison Allen has a way of writing that makes the pages melt away like the frosting on so many of the delectable pastries in her books. Every character in the story brings something “to the table” so to speak, there is a fullness to each person no matter how long they appear in the story. Emily, Julia, Win, Sawyer, but most of all Vance are characters you’d want to have over for dinner. I’m inclined to like Vance the most because of how his quiet demeanor and personal character outweigh even his giant stature.
Honestly, I can’t say much more about the story without giving away too much of the plot. I will say though, that in some way I connected with each character in the story, something that doesn’t happen to me often. Each has a journey to share and through those journeys they learn the true meaning of “welcome”. This is a story not to be missed, one you will devour quickly and deliciously.

I read this book in two days, even though I had 6 literature classes to study for at the time, I still couldn’t put it down. I loved this book!
Also if you liked this you will love her other books Garden Spells and Sugar Queen
Thanks Amanda! I adored this book, I think I will have to try out her other books. I’m still wanting to keep re-reading this one even though it’s been a few days.
